Abstract
During the period of 11 years and 8 months from January, 1957 to August, 1968, 101 cases of primary lung tumors were diagnosed from clinical and roentgenological findings in this department.
Of these 80 cases with detailed records, 64 were proved by histological examination. Sixty-nine were males and eleven females.
The majoritry of the patients (90%) were from 41 to 69 years of age, the youngest being 19 and the oldest 69. The average was 54.4.
The average duration of symptoms before admission was 21 weeks.
The smoking history revealed that 57 palients had smoked for more than 10 years, and only 8 patients were non-smokers.
The most prominent clinical features were cough in 82.5%, chest pain in 55%, dyspnea in 44% and hemoptysis or bloody sputum in 44%.
Histopathologically, 33 cases (51.6%) were of the squamous cell type, 21 (32.8%) anaplastic carcinoma, 4 adenocarcinoma and the four cases were undetermined.
The 46 cases (57.5%) of the total of the 80 cases were operated.
Twenty-eight cases (35%) out of the 46 thoracotomies were resectable, 19 with lobectomy and 9 with pneumonectomy.
The remaining 18 cases were unersectable.
Two cases died within a month after operation.
The remaining thirty-four not operated were treated with irradiation and/or chemotherapy with minimal improvement.
